Stunt Performer Spotlight: Tristan Crisol

Featured Interview With Stunt Performer: Tristan Crisol

Tell about yourself and your background! *

I was born in Los Angeles, but raised in San Jose (moved when I was 5 from Woodland Hills) and my parents (who were both Tae Kwon Do practitioners  in the Philippines) enrolled me in what I thought was Karate (Actually Tang Soo Do).After I moved to San Jose I found a new dojo and I competed in tournaments (Through Young Olympians Karate) while training. By the age of 10 I had earned my first degree black belt in Tang So Do. After that I briefly trained in Tae Kwon Do at Ernie Reyes' West Coast for about 6 months, then I was introduced to theatre by an outreach program at my elementary school. The people running that show invited me to come audition for a show in the community theatre (CMTSJ) and I ended up loving it so my path changed from then on. In between rehearsals growing up I would train here and there at my old dojo as well as at a capoeira studio. After I graduated high school I moved back to Los Angeles to go to school at AMDA for theatre. Around 2009, I started taking formal classes in Muay Thai via Legends MMA. I finished college, training here and there at Legends as well as reviewing my training by showing my friends and solo training. In 2012, I happened to meet an old escrima master walking around Hollywood Blvd. and he introduced me to the art of Serrada Escrima in which I currently have an Instructor Grade certificate for. I started working for the entertainment department at Universal Studios Hollywood as a character performer, and I left in 2017 to teach martial arts at a dojo for kids. By 2019 I was not only teaching kids in the afternoon, but also at a kickboxing gym during the day. Quarantine happened and through luck, I ended up moving into a house with my friend who works for Action Horizons. He suggested I audition for the Waterworld Stunt Show and I ended up booking the show in July of 2021. Since then I've been actively putting the work into becoming a stunt performer, of which my first big goal is acquiring my SAG card (I currently have 1 voucher earned through background work) as well as training in various wrecks.

What inspired you to become a stunt performer?

Admittedly, the duo combination of watching Jackie chan movies growing up and the realization that I have skills for it once I booked Waterworld.

What is your greatest skill as a stunt performer, is there a stunt behind it?

Martial Arts, specifically Muay Thai, Karate and Serrada Escrima.

What is the best part about being a stunt performer?

Being able to put two of my passions together into one cohesive way of self expression (Martial Arts + Performing)

Tell your all-time favorite stunt story!

TBH I don't have many that are worth telling...yet haha!

What advice would you give other stunt performers?

Never underestimate the power of believing in yourself, and remember when you can, to add value to other people lives in genuine manner, not out of any self serving connotations.

Anything else you'd like to tell the community about?

I'm just grateful to be here and I am excited for this new journey in my life!
