Stunt Performer Spotlight: Janet Wang

Featured Interview With Stunt Performer: Janet Wang

Tell about yourself and your background! *

As a kid I was active in a ton of different sports.  I grew up figure skating, swimming, playing hockey, gymnastics, and diving.  In high school I was introduced to Tae Kwon Do by a boyfriend.  I was a quick learner and before I knew it I had my black belt!  Out of school I practiced Muay Thai kickboxing.  I was also heavily into the theatre arts, and had some training in theatre combat!

What inspired you to become a stunt performer?

So, I honestly had no aspirations to be a stunt girl.  I actually wanted to be an actress, but life took me a different direction for a little while.  During this time I trained as an aerialist, specifically on the pole, Lyra, and aerial cube.  I was introduced to Ken Sevier, a well known stunt coordinator here in Houston.  He was Mark Chavarria’s protégé.  After his death, Ken continued his legacy here in Houston.  But I started working for Ken as an aerialist on his burlesque team!  After getting to know me, he found out that I was a martial artist and said, “I’m going to make you a stunt girl.” And now, I’m here.

What is your greatest skill as a stunt performer, is there a stunt behind it?

I love doing wire work!  But I’d say I’m best at getting my butt kicked in fight scenes.

What is the best part about being a stunt performer?

I love seeing the audience reactions when you do something epic, or get brutally hit.  It’s great knowing that I made it look real enough to get an emotion out of the audience.

Tell your all-time favorite stunt story!

My aerial equipment was set up in the warehouse, that's where I practiced on my own. When I first met the guys from Westmount Action Design I had no idea who any of them were.  I only knew Ken.  The guys were all talking about the projects they were on, or just got off of.  When I walked in they introduced themselves to me, and asked what I had just finished.  I paused, looked around at them, and said see that pole?  I dance on that…

What advice would you give other stunt performers?

Safety is the number one priority.  If you’re unsure, need a break, or don’t feel safe, speak up!  No one will think any less of you.

Anything else you'd like to tell the community about?

Always be friendly and professional.  You never know who’s watching or listening, and you never know who you’re talking too.  And stay humble…
