Stunt Performer Spotlight: James Mowat

Featured Interview With Stunt Performer: James Mowat

Tell about yourself and your background! *

I am a stunt performer based in Vancouver. I am known for being a good all around stunt performer who can take hard hits and is good on a wire. My background is gymnastics. I stay in shape by working out/training and playing lots of hockey.

What inspired you to become a stunt performer?

I love movies and wanted to be in them. I always loved the action and found out that I could be a part of it and I was sold. I grew up with 3 older brothers and that helped me get tough, lol. I rode motorcycles and played Polo growing up with my grandfather. I wanted to honour him also. He was a tough guy but kind and I loved him.

What is your greatest skill as a stunt performer, is there a stunt behind it?

Gymnastics. It has helped me the most in almost every stunt I have ever done. Especially wire work.

What is the best part about being a stunt performer?

Just the thrill of completing a big stunt very well. No better feeling than right after a big stunt day in your trailer knowing that you killed it! Also making your boss (coordinator) happy is a great feeling. I guess also when people compliment you on your work later after they have seen it is nice too, lol.

Tell your all-time favorite stunt story!

After completing my big night on Predator doubling Thomas Jane. I ran up a log and dove onto the super Predator while he was on fire 🔥, which caught me on fire 🔥 and stabbed him in the head repeatedly. He then had enough of me and threw me backwards 30 feet into a tree and I got impaled(30 foot ratchet, very hard hit).     The coolest thing was after, just hanging out with Thomas, just the 2 of us. We chatted about our careers and lives and became friends. I will never forget it.

What advice would you give other stunt performers?

Never give up, and put in the work. It isn’t easy. Don’t take it for granted. Believe in yourself and make it happen. Also, train. Have fun!

Anything else you'd like to tell the community about?

This is a wonderful career and I love every moment of my life. Not everyone makes it, so  enjoy it.
